Designer Interview: Samantha Siu

Samantha Siu's love affair with jewellery began in her childhood, growing up in the fashion factories of New York and China. Trained early in the art of jewellery making, she always believed a necklace was more than an accessory. As President and Chief Creative Director, Samantha Siu brings this belief to life.

When and where did you first begin?

My Jewellery journey first began, when I was a kid playing around in my family’s manufacturing factory in Brooklyn. I was 13 when they started their jewellery manufacturing  company. I would intern on the weekends, packing jewellery for one cent a pop. Slowly I worked up the latter. At 16 I started working as a sales representative for convention shows for my family’s company.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

My design inspiration first came from a jewellery final project at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I had to create a wax carving piece and embed it as a jewellery piece. When I started thinking of concepts for my project, the commercial with Nichole Kidman for Chanel No 5. came to mind. She was gliding up the stairs and she had a pendant on her back. It made me realise why we don't have back jewellery? So in that class, I made the first sample of the revisable back jewellery necklace. I knew I had a wonderful design in mind, but I didn't have the right inspiration yet. I didn’t find what I was looking for, until I fell in love for the first time. I travelled the world with my first love where I gained inspiration from architecture, nature, culture, and colours.

Describe your brand in 3 words.

Revolutionary, sustainable, inclusive.

What is the most difficult aspect of running your own label?

Beginning something that no one has done before, and making it known.

Which part of the creative process do you enjoy most, and least?

I enjoy the travelling part the most! I enjoy the creating aspect, which includes collaboration with the team, design, and brand building. I don’t enjoy the mistakes and failures, but I understand the importance. There is a lot of trial and error along the way.

Do you have a mentor?

I have many mentors. Success is not self built, it takes a village.

How long did your latest collection take to create?

We've been creating our revolutionary bracelets that are size adjustable, designed with inclusivity in mind. It's been two years since conceptualising the bracelet collection and it’s still in the works. Like I said before, there are a lot of trial and errors in the design process. I think it’s important to improve the product along the way to ensure it's the best quality.

What are your future plans?

To catapult the brand into something that people recognise the signature in the moment they look at the pieces. We wanted to create a brand where people resonate with the brand, its brand purpose/story, and appreciate the design. We will also like to continue to build close relationships with vendors, collaborate with like minded individuals/companies and create new brand extensions.

Which pieces do you think everyone should have in their wardrobe?

Everyone should have a pair of earrings because they can be worn for any occasion. They should have two bracelets because they can combine to make a necklace or worn as a double stack or one on each arm. This is my recommendation for the customer looking for versatile everyday wear. But if you are an admirer of art and fine jewellery then definitely a necklace.

What attracted you to The Clothing Lounge?

I was attracted to The Clothing Lounge for their goals to bring consumers pieces that are high quality, ethical and sustainable. It is a huge goal of Samantha Siu New York to change consumer buying behaviour to be more sustainably conscious.
