Art and Emotion: Essence of Mambü Designs

In the wake of the pandemic, many individuals found relief in revisiting past hobbies, sparking a widespread cultural nostalgia for childhood interests. From the resurgence of vintage bands to a renewed love for analogue photography and crafts, the period marked a return to simpler, more hands-on pleasures. Raquel Monteiro, inspired by a television report in 2019, rekindled her own creative passion, leading to the birth of Mambü—a brand known for its vibrant, uniquely shaped pieces. We sat down with Raquel to discuss the evolution of her brand, her long-term aspirations, and the enduring importance of craftsmanship in today’s fast-paced world.

Q: How do you engage with your customers, both online and offline?

A: My engagement with customers began online during the pandemic when I started sharing my art on social media platforms. The response was overwhelmingly positive, which encouraged me to expand offline, participating in events and markets where I could interact with customers face-to-face. This blend of interactions has been essential in building a strong, supportive community around Mambü.

Q: Where does your passion for artistic expression come from, and how is it reflected in your craftsmanship?

A: My passion for artistic expression is deeply rooted in nature and a childhood filled with freedom and exploration. As a child, I often assisted my father, who was an electrician, in fixing things around the house. This early exposure to problem-solving and creativity sparked my artistic mindset, which now profoundly influences my craftsmanship. Each piece I create is a reflection of this journey.

Q: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in building Mambü, and how did you overcome it?

A: The biggest challenge was a period of uncertainty when I questioned whether I had anything more to create. It was a difficult time that made me consider stopping entirely. However, I overcame this through patience and perseverance. The positive feedback I received from my audience played a crucial role in rebuilding my confidence, reminding me that my work had value and that I should continue.

Q: Can you share a memorable moment that significantly impacted Mambü?

A: A pivotal moment for Mambü was in 2020, during the height of the pandemic. I decided to share my art on social media, and the response was incredible. The overwhelming positive feedback helped to establish Mambü as a brand and gave me the motivation to continue pursuing this path.

Q: How do you incorporate sustainability into Mambü’s practices and designs?

A: Sustainability is a core value for Mambü. I strive to respect nature by making thoughtful material choices and embracing a hands-on creation process. Every piece is made with consideration for the environment, ensuring that the brand remains as eco-friendly as possible.

Q: What role does cultural heritage play in your designs?

A: My cultural heritage plays a significant role in my work. My abstract paintings, rich in colour and form, are deeply influenced by the cultural traditions I grew up with. I’ve observed that art inspired by cultural roots can evoke strong emotional responses, like the serene smile of a woman who connected with one of my pieces. This empathy and connection are at the heart of what I aim to achieve with my designs.

Q: How do you keep your designs fresh in a rapidly changing fashion landscape?

A: While I choose colours intuitively, I also stay informed about fashion trends by following resources like WGSN and Pantone. Every six months, I review these trends to ensure that my creations remain relevant and aligned with the broader fashion landscape, while still maintaining the unique identity of Mambü.

Q: What collaborations or partnerships have been particularly meaningful for Mambü?

A: One of the most meaningful collaborations was gaining initial exposure through shops in Bairro Alto, such as Rosa 78 and Lena Aires. These partnerships were crucial in the early days of Mambü. Currently, I’m collaborating with Kapablestore, which has been an exciting opportunity to expand the brand’s reach.

Q: What trends do you see emerging in the fashion industry, and how is Mambü responding to them?

A: There’s a growing appreciation for uniqueness and handcrafted items in the fashion industry. Mambü responds to this trend by continuing to produce one-of-a-kind pieces that celebrate authenticity and individual expression.

Q: What are Mambü’s long-term goals?

A: Looking ahead, I hope to collaborate with various fashion designers to create unique pieces that highlight their work. Expanding these collaborations will allow Mambü to reach new audiences and continue to grow as a brand.

Q: Do you think the trend of valuing artisanal products will continue in the coming years?

A: Absolutely. I believe there’s an increasing recognition of the value of handmade items and the authenticity they represent. People are becoming more conscious of the importance of supporting artisanal work, and I’m confident this trend will continue to grow.

Q: What message would you like to share with young people who are interested in art and design?

A: My advice to young creatives is to be brave in following your dreams. Trusting the process, even when it’s challenging, will always lead you somewhere meaningful. Don’t be afraid to take risks and embrace your creative journey.

Mambü’s journey is a testament to the therapeutic power of art, the significance of sustainability, and the enduring value of craftsmanship in our modern world. Each piece Raquel creates is a reflection of her personal journey and creative process. By sharing the inspiration behind her designs and the roots of her brand, she connects with customers on a deeper, more meaningful level. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, Mambü remains committed to celebrating authenticity, cultural heritage, and the beauty of handmade artistry.

"The unique, handcrafted item created by an individual will invariably persist, even if only as a form of survival. I genuinely believe it represents what our hearts yearn for and what commands our attention."
